The video service YouTube is to arrive on mobile phones for the first time under a deal with Verizon Wireless in the US.

The deal will be announced later today and is believed to include an upload service for films shot with video phones.

YouTube was bought earlier this month by Google for $1.76bn.

The mobile YouTube service is expected to be launched in December and will form part of Verizon’s V Cast service. V Cast costs $15 per month or $3 per day.

Verizon has been upping the ante on services such as text messaging and music and video to stimulate new revenue streams. It is hoped that the popularity of user-generated content, which has become one of the most popular ways of watching video, will enjoy similar success on the mobile as it has on the desktop PC.

YouTube gets in excess of 100 million hits on its videos every day and is looking at spreading its services to all mobile platforms. “Mobile is just one of the things we’re looking at,” said YouTube’s co-founder, Steve Chen.

In the UK O2 has already launched LookAtMe – its own variation of the YouTube service which it describes as “part video blog and part mobile reality TV”. Users send in clips and can earn cash for the best ones.

3, which earlier this month announced its X-Series mobile broadband offering, also has comparible services dubbed the ‘Kink Kommunity’ and See Me TV.
