Here is a list of farming and agriculture vocabulary for the industry. It's not a complete list of all the words you'll need to work in this industry, but it's a good place to start. The part of speech is listed for each word. Each word is followed by an example sentence to provide context. Do you know the word? If not, use a dictionary to look the word up. Next, follow the tips to practice the new vocabulary.

1. Ability - (noun) Our ability to produce hay has tripled over the past three years.
2. Academic - (adjective) It's important to have an academic background when breeding crops.
3. Activities - (noun) Our fall activities include a hay ride and corn maze.
4. Affect - (verb) The past winter's rains will affect the harvest.
5. Agricultural - (adjective) The agricultural landscape has changed greatly over the past fifty years.
6. Agriculture - (noun) Agriculture used to play a much larger role in the economy.
7. American - (adjective) American farmers produce wheat which is sold abroad.
8. Animal - (noun) It's important not to feed these animals any corn.
9. Aquaculture - (noun) Aquaculture is an expanding business opportunity.
10. Aspect - (noun) One aspect of our business focuses on grain production.
11. Background - (noun) Our family has an excellent background in agriculture.
12. Bails - (noun) Pick up those bails of hay and take them to the barn.
13. Bitten - (adjective) If you've been bitten by a snake, see the doctor!
14. Breed - (noun) We breed horses on our ranch.

1. Breeding  - (noun) Breeding dogs is a popular business in the countryside.
2. Business  - (noun) Our business focuses on hemp import.
3. Care - (noun) We should provide better care for our livestock.
4. Cattle - (noun) The cattle are in the south field.
5. Certification - (noun) We need to apply for certification once every three years.
6. Chemicals - (noun plural) We promise not to use chemicals in our fertilizer.
7. Clean - (adjective) You'll find the barn is clean and ready for the livestock.
8. Climate - (noun) The climate is changing rapidly and we need to respond.
9. Cold - (adjective) Last year we lost a few crops to the cold.
10. Common - (adjective) It's a common method to fight insect infestation. 
11. Communication - (noun) The communication between farmer and market is essential.
12. Computer - (noun) Use that computer to do the bookkeeping.
13. Conditions  - (noun) We'll harvest next week if weather conditions are good.
14. Constantly - (adverb) We strive to constantly improve our products.
15. Continue  - (verb) Let's continue watering this field until five.

1. Contract  - (noun) We signed a contract to deliver 200 head of cattle.
2. Contrast - (noun / verb) We contrast our products to others by organically farming.
3. Cooperative - (noun) The farmer's cooperative sells vegetables at very reasonable prices.
4. Corporation - (noun) Unfortunately, corporations are replacing family farms.
5. Cow - (noun) The cow was ill and was slaughtered.
6. Credit - (noun) It's risky business taking out credit to seed a new field.
7. Crop - (noun) This year's corn crop was outstanding.
8. Customer  - (noun) The customer is always king.
9. Dairy - (adjective) Our dairy products are sold throughout Washington.
10. Decade- (noun) We've been in the business for more than a decade.
11. Decline - (noun / verb) Unfortunately, we've seen a decline in sales recently.
12. Deliver - (verb) We deliver sod to your home.
13. Demands - (noun) The demands of farming gets me up early every morning.
14. Disease - (noun) Make sure that the there is no disease in that crop.
15. Driver's - (adjective) Get a driver's license and we can put you to work.

1. Duties - (noun) Your duties include gathering eggs every morning.
2. Egg - (noun) We gather more than 1,000 eggs each day.
3. Environment - (noun) The environment is fragile. 
4. Equipment - (noun) The equipment is located in the barn.
5. Exposure- (noun) The eastern field has more exposure to the sun.
6. Facilities - (noun) Our facilities include three hundred acres of pasture land.
7. Farm - (noun) The farm is located in Vermont.
8. Farmer - (noun) The farmer purchased seed for his livestock.
9. Feed - (noun) Take the feed out to the barn.
10. Fertilizer - (noun) We use the best fertilizer possible on our crops.
11. Fiber - (noun) You need more fiber in your diet.
12. Fish - (noun) Fish can be farmed for profit.
13. Flower - (noun) We grow and sell flowers from all over the world.
14. Fruit - (noun) The fruit is ripe.
15. Grazing - (noun) Our horses are out grazing.
16. Greenhouse - (noun) We grow tomatoes in the greenhouse.
17. Grown - (adjective) We sell grown shrubs.
18. Handle - (noun / verb) Grab that handle and let's lift this up onto the truck.
19. Harvest - (noun / verb) Last year's harvest was excellent.

1. Hay - (noun) Load the hay into the back of the truck.
2. Hazardous - (adjective) Be careful of the hazardous chemicals in some fertilizers.
3. Health - (noun) Take care of your health.
4. Horse - (noun) The horse needs to be shoed. 
5. Horticulture - (noun) Horticulture should be taught in our local high school.
6. Indoors - (noun) We grow the plants indoors in a controlled setting.
7. Knowledge - (noun) He has a lot of knowledge about local plants.
8. Laborer  - (noun) We need to hire some laborers to help with the harvest.
9. Land - (noun) You should invest in some new land for grazing.
10. Landowner  - (noun) The landowner rented out the land to a local business.
11. Landscaping - (noun) Landscaping involves taking care of gardens and lawns.
12. Leading - (adjective) The leading agricultural experts say to play in June.
13. Lease - (noun) Our lease on this land is up at the end of January.
14. License - (noun) Do you have a cultivation license?
15. Livestock - (noun) The livestock are grazing in the fields.
16. Location - (noun) We're looking for a new location for our farm.

1. Machinery - (noun) Machinery costs keep rising.
2. Machine  - (noun) That machine needs to be repaired.
3. Maintain - (verb) We maintain our own machinery.
4. Maintenance - (noun) The maintenance is scheduled for next week.
5. Meat - (noun) We have the freshest meat in the state.
6. Method  - (noun) We use traditional methods for our produce.
7. Nursery - (noun) The nursery grows bushy plants and fruit trees.
8. Nut  - (noun) The hazel nut is common in Oregon.
9. Offer - (noun / verb) We'd like to offer you a discount on our products.
10. Operate - (verb) We operate in Lincoln County.
11. Organic - (adjective) All of our food is organic.
12. Oversee - (verb) Peter oversees our wheat sales.
13. Pack - (noun / verb) Let's pack up these tools and go home.
14. Pen  - (noun) Use that pen to sign here.
15. Pesticide  - (noun) Pesticides are very dangerous and should be used with caution.
16. Physical - (adjective) Farming is a very physical activity.
17. Plant - (noun) That plant is new to our farm.
18. Poultry - (noun) Chickens and turkeys are also known as poultry.

1. Process - (noun) The curing process takes three weeks.
2. Produce - (noun / verb) Our produce is sold throughout the state.
3. Raise - (verb) We raise chicken and rabbits on our farm.
4. Ranch - (noun / verb) The ranch is located in California.
5. Rancher - (noun) The rancher spent the day herding the cattle.
6. Reflecting - (adjective) This reflecting tape marks the spot.
7. Regulation  - (noun) There are many regulations that we need to follow.
8. Repair - (noun / verb) Do you think you can repair the tractor?
9. Responsibilities - (noun) My responsibilities include caring for livestock.
10. Risk - (noun / verb) Bad weather is one of the greatest risks in farming.
11. Rural - (adjective) Our rural location is ideal for farming activities.
12. Safety - (noun) Safety is our first priority.
13. Scale - (noun) Use that scale to weigh the fruit. 
14. Schedule - (noun / verb) Our schedule includes three trips to the farm.
15. Season - (noun) It's not harvest season yet.
16. Seasonal - (adjective) We sell seasonal fruit at the fruit stand.
17. Seed - (noun) Plant the seed here.

1. Sheep - (noun) Those black sheep have excellent wool.
2. Shrub  - (noun) Those shrubs need to be trimmed.
3. Supervise - (verb) Could you supervise the harvest this year?
4. Training- (noun) We should provide safety training for all of our employees.
5. Tree  - (noun) I planted that tree twenty years ago.
6. Vegetable  - (noun) We grow vegetables and fruit on our farm.

Improving Your Vocabulary Tips

• Use each word in a sentence. First, practice speaking. Next, write the sentences. Using the word when both speaking and writing will help you remember new words. 
• After writing a few words in sentences try to write a paragraph using the same words. 
• Learn synonyms and antonyms by using an online thesaurus to further extend your farming and agriculture vocabulary. 
• Use a visual dictionary which will help you learn the names of specific equipment used in the industry. 
• Listen to co-workers and note how they use these words. Check your understanding when they use words in different ways. 
• Ask co-workers questions about how new words are used at work.
