UK high street mobile phone retailer Carphone Warehouse is taking pre-orders for Nokia devices pre-loaded with the Finnish handset maker’s Comes With Music platform.
Nokia announced the subscription service – which unlike some rival offerings allows users to keep their music – in December 2007 and has been eagerly signing deals with leading record labels such as Universal, Warner and Sony BMG.
“Comes with Music is the more radical part of Nokia’s music service offering. In a devices market like Western Europe that is saturated and highly competitive, differentiation is key. Differentiating on the hardware side is not always enough. With Comes with Music, Nokia is trying to add more value to its devices to help drive brand as well as a higher price tag on the devices themselves,” said Gartner research director Carolina Milanesi.
Tero Ojanpera, Executive Vice President and Head of the Nokia Entertainment and Communities business, said: “We believe that Comes With Music will transform the way people enjoy music. With unlimited music access for a year, you can enjoy your favourite artists or delve into new genres without having to worry about individual track or album purchases.”
