Another company has joined the raft of internet telephony players presently wading out into the market. US-based iSkoot on Friday introduced a Java-based thin client designed for putting VoIP on dual mode and cellular phones.

The user installable platform claims it allows the handset to connect with VoIP services such as Skype, GoogleTalk, AIM, Microsoft Messenger and Yahoo Messenger. The platform also allows connectivity over wifi, GPRS and WCDMA (3G) and GSM and CDMA.

At present, the software is only compatible with Skype, but other platforms are promised soon.

The software claims it can access your Skype buddy list so you can see the online status of your contacts as well as check your SkypeOut credit balance.

The service is free as the offering still appears to be in Beta phase, but the company’s web site hints that it intends to start charging a monthly fee. Unless connecting over wifi and calling other Skype users, users of the service will still be liable to pay the data charges for using the service over cellular though.
